The property was built in 1859 by Colonel William Cresap Ord (1798-1882), who served as Chief Engineer for the United States Army Corps of Engineers during the Mexican War (1846-48). He also designed many fortifications around Washington D.C., including Fort Stevens on Columbia Island near Alexandria Virginia which still stands today as part of Arlington National Cemetery.
